Brief (and likely incomplete) History: [2]

Unlike conventional vehicle doors, the Lamborghini® scissor doors open upwards, and close downwards, in a vertical motion. The scissor doors hinge at the front of the door, near the base of the A-pillar, and rotate vertically upwards and downwards using a complex system of hinges and gas struts to ensure smooth and controlled operation.

The Lamborghini Countach, unveiled in 1971 and launched in 1974, was the first Lamborghini model to feature the iconic scissor doors, also known by fans as "Lambo doors" or "vertical doors." This groundbreaking design was the brainchild of Marcello Gandini, the chief designer responsible for the car's design. Gandini's inspiration for the scissor doors came from the need for better ergonomics and practicality: the wide and low-slung design of the Countach made traditional doors impractical in tight parking spaces, and the scissor doors allowed for easier ingress and egress.

Following the Countach, the Lamborghini scissor doors have also been featured on other iconic V12-powered super sports cars, including the Diablo, Murciélago, Aventador, Reventón, Sian, and Revuelto. The consistent use of scissor doors in these models helped to cement the association of this design feature with the Lamborghini brand, making it a hallmark of Lamborghini’s design language.
