The ice is resurfaced (likely by a ZAMBONI® brand ice resurfacing machine) and the puck is ready to be dropped. Congratulations to the Golden Knights for advancing to the 2026 STANLEY CUP® finals! This week we will be highlighting some NHL related trademark registrations, including those owned by the Vegas Golden Knights and the Carolina Hurricanes. Good luck, Golden Knights!
The Golden Knights were awarded to Las Vegas as an NHL expansion team in 2016 (one year before the Las Vegas Aces joined the WNBA!) and began play during the 2017–18 NHL season, becoming the first major professional sports franchise based in Las Vegas. Expectations for an expansion team were low, but the Golden Knights immediately became one of the best stories in sports. Behind a roster built largely through the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft, the Golden Knights posted a 51–24–7 record in its first season, by far the best mark by an expansion team in NHL history. Vegas went on to win the Pacific Division made a stunning run all the way to the Stanley Cup Final, where it eventually fell to the Washington Capitals.
The franchise continued its success in subsequent seasons as regular playoff contenders. Vegas finally broke through in 2023, capturing its first Stanley Cup championship by defeating the Florida Panthers in five games. Vegas is back in the Stanley Cup Final again in 2026 after sweeping the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference Final, making its third Final appearance in just nine seasons.
Unfortunately, and unlike its quick playoff success, the Golden Knight’s trademark portfolio is more befitting of a team with less than a decade of existence.
VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS® [4] and the Helmet and Shield Logo design mark [5] and the Cross and Swords Logo design mark [6] are all registered trademarks for entertainment services (professional ice hockey exhibitions) and a variety of clothing.
The team also owns several trademark registrations for its slogans, including IT’S KNIGHT TIME® [7], KNIGHTS GUARD® [8], KNIGHT LIFE® [9], DEFEND THE FORTRESS® [10], and MEDIEVAL MANIACS® [11], all registered for a variety of entertainment services.
