Congratulations to the Las Vegas Aces for advancing to the 2025 WNBA® Finals! Over the next few days we will be highlighting some trademark registrations celebrating the WNBA’s championship game, including those owned by Phoenix and Las Vegas. Good luck Aces!
The Las Vegas Aces franchise traces its beginnings all the way back to the founding of the WNBA, when it was formed as the Utah Starzz, one of the WNBA’s eight original teams. After six seasons in Utah, the team relocated to San Antonio in 2003 and became the San Antonio Silver Stars (later simply “Stars”). In late 2017, the franchise was purchased by MGM Resorts and relocated to Las Vegas for the 2018 season, rebranding as the Aces. That year, the Aces selected A’ja Wilson with the first overall pick in the draft. Under new ownership (Mark Davis, who acquired the team in 2021) and guided by coach Becky Hammon (hired in December 2021), Las Vegas earned its first WNBA championship in 2022 and followed it with a repeat title in 2023, becoming the first franchise in over two decades to win back-to-back championships.
The Aces may be the team to beat over the last few years, but when it comes to trademark registrations, the team is struggling. Let’s get this out of the way to start – the team name “Las Vegas Aces” is not a registered trademark! The WNBA owns common law rights (unregistered rights gained through use) in the team name, but why they never bothered filing for the team name is a mystery.
While lacking word mark registrations, the Aces at least has two design mark registrations. The Las Vegas Aces logo [4] and the Diamond LVA Logo [5] are registered design marks used primarily for entertainment and educational services relating to basketball, and also for clothing [6].
The team has a few pending trademark applications as well, including design mark applications for the Ace Card Logo [7], the A Logo [8], and the Aces Cards Logo [9]. All three design mark applications are pending in connection with entertainment and educational services relating to basketball and clothing.
