Congratulations to the Milwaukee Brewers and the Tampa Bay Rays for advancing to the 2026 World Series! This week we will be highlighting some World Series related trademark registrations, including those owned by Major League Baseball, the Brewers, and Rays. Good luck Milwaukee!
The Milwaukee Brewers franchise started play in 1969 as the Seattle Pilots, an American League expansion team that lasted just one season before financial difficulties forced its sale (the team now sells clothing under the SEATTLE PILOTS® [4] and PILOTS® [5] brands in remembrance!). In April 1970, a group led by Milwaukee businessman Bud Selig purchased the struggling franchise and relocated it to Milwaukee, returning Major League Baseball to the city for the first time since the Braves departed for Atlanta following the 1965 season. The team adopted the name “Brewers” in recognition of Milwaukee’s longstanding beer-brewing industry and as a tribute to earlier minor league teams that had used the name, including the Milwaukee Brewers of the American Association (1902–1952). The franchise initially played at Milwaukee County Stadium before moving to Miller Park (now American Family Field) in 2001. Originally a member of the American League, the Brewers switched to the National League in 1998, becoming the first modern MLB franchise to change leagues.
The Brewers enjoyed their first major success in the late 1970s and early 1980s behind stars such as Robin Yount, Paul Molitor, and Cecil Cooper, earning the nickname “Harvey’s Wallbangers” for their powerful offense under manager Harvey Kuenn. In 1982, Milwaukee captured its first American League pennant and advanced to the World Series, ultimately falling to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games. After decades of mixed results, the Brewers returned to prominence (led by the FAMOUS RACING SAUSAGES®) with postseason appearances in 2008, 2011, and 2018, led by players including Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun, and Christian Yelich. Milwaukee subsequently established itself as a consistent contender in the National League Central, winning three consecutive division titles from 2023 through 2025. In 2026, the Brewers won a franchise-record 103 regular-season games before sweeping the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series, securing their first World Series appearance in 44 years and an opportunity to capture their first championship.
The BREWERS® word mark is registered for baseball entertainment services, clothing, sporting goods, toys, and other merchandise [6]. The team also owns registrations for BREW CREW®, a popular nickname used by fans to refer to the Brewers, covering clothing and other team-related goods and services [7].
Perhaps the team's most recognizable logo is the iconic MB Mitt Logo which cleverly combines the letters “M” and “B” to form a baseball glove, complete with a baseball nestled in the pocket. Introduced in 1978, the logo is protected by several trademark registrations covering clothing, sporting goods, trading cards, and other merchandise [8]. The team also owns registrations for several other historic design marks, including the Milwaukee Brewers Mixed Lettering Logo [9] which features the team's name in two distinct lettering styles, and the MB Diamond Logo [10] which places the interlocking “M” and “B” inside a baseball diamond.
Additional registrations protect the Brewers Baseball Logo [11] featuring the team's name alongside a baseball design, and the M Logo [12] featuring a stylized “M” accented by barley stalks, a nod to Milwaukee's brewing heritage. These registrations cover various goods and services, including baseball entertainment services, clothing, and printed materials. More recently, the Brewers secured a registration for the Milwaukee Cursive Logo featuring the city's name in stylized script, for clothing, including jerseys, shirts, jackets, and headwear [13].
