The games don’t start until next weekend, but let’s get an early jump on some trademark portfolios! Today, let’s look at some history and trademark registrations for the University of Connecticut.
The University of Connecticut was established in 1881 as the Storrs Agricultural School after brothers Charles and Augustus Storrs donated land and money to create an agricultural college in Connecticut. The school later became Storrs Agricultural College, then Connecticut Agricultural College, and officially took the name University of Connecticut in 1939.
The men’s basketball team began play in 1900, but spent its first 90 years mired in mediocrity. Jim Calhoun took over as coach in 1990 and quickly turned the program into a powerhouse. Today, UConn arguably owns the premier basketball program in both men’s and women’s sports. The men’s team has eight Final Four appearances since 1999 (1999, 2004, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2023, 2024, 2026) and six national championships (1999, 2004, 2011, 2014, 2023, 2024). Now under Danny Hurley, the Huskies are back in the Final Four looking for their third championship in four years.
The school owns a few word mark registrations protecting the school name and mascot, including UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT® [4], CONNECTICUT HUSKIES® [5], UCONN® [6], and CONNECTICUT® [7], all in connection with clothing and education and entertainment services. UConn also owns word mark registrations for a few slogans, including BASKETBALL CAPITAL OF THE WORLD® [8] (for clothing) and HUSKYMANIA® [9] (for entertainment and educational services).
UConn also owns a few design mark registrations for the school’s letters, including the C Logo design mark [10], UC Logo design mark [11], and the C Basketball Logo design mark [12], all registered in connection with clothing. And finally, the school owns a bunch of design mark variations protecting its Husky mascot, including the Husky 1981 Logo design mark [13], Husky 2013 Logo design mark [14], Husky 1970 Logo design mark [15], Husky 1980 Logo design mark [16], and the Husky 1959 Logo design mark [17], all also registered in connection with clothing.
