The Lions Club International Logo trademark is a significant piece of trademark history – it is one of the oldest still-registered collective membership mark registrations in the United States!
Lions Clubs International is a global service organization founded in 1917 in Chicago, Illinois. Chicago businessman Melvin Jones had a simple but powerful idea: what if business leaders used their talents not just to get ahead, but to serve their communities? That spark led to the creation of the Lions Clubs, a membership group with a mission of empowering volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, and promote peace and international understanding. Today, Lions Clubs International has grown into one of the largest service organizations in the world, with more than 1.4 million members across 200 countries.
And the lion? Early members wanted an emblem that stood for strength, courage, and loyalty; all traits they felt reflected their mission. The Lions Club International Logo collective mark features a lion facing both left and right: one looking back at the club’s proud history, and one looking forward to future service. It is a tidy piece of symbolism that has stood the test of time, much like the organization itself.
