Brief (and likely incomplete) History [5]:

This may be hard to imagine now, but for most of human history we did not wash our hands. Soap itself is ancient, with early forms dating back thousands of years to Babylon, Egypt, and Rome, where mixtures of fats, oils, ashes, and alkaline salts were used for cleaning textiles, bathing, and other practical purposes. But soap was not always understood as a health product. For much of history, cleanliness was more about appearance, smell, or social custom than disease prevention. That began to change in the 1800s, as germ theory, antiseptic surgery, and public health campaigns helped connect cleanliness with survival.

In 1894, the Lever Brothers launched LIFEBUOY® in the United Kingdom as the “Royal Disinfectant Soap,” an affordable carbolic soap built around hygiene and germ protection. Carbolic acid, also known as phenol, had already become famous through Joseph Lister’s work using antiseptics to reduce infection in surgical settings. Lifebuoy brought that same idea into the home. Its reddish color and strong medicinal smell came from the carbolic formula and quickly became a part of the brand’s identity.

During World War I, Lifebuoy encouraged people at home to send soap to soldiers, framing hygiene as part of keeping troops healthy. During World War II, Lifebuoy reportedly sent branded vans with hot showers, towels, and soap into heavily bombed areas of Britain so residents without basic amenities could wash. The brand also became known for advertising that warned consumers about “B.O.,” or body odor, helping turn daily hygiene into both a health issue and a social one. The original carbolic scent eventually gave way to milder, more perfumed versions of the soap, but the core message stayed the same: Lifebuoy was built on the idea that washing with soap could help protect health and save lives.

Unilever, the parent company of Conopco and owner of the Lifebuoy brand, is also the owner of several other well-known brand names that you might recognize (and be surprised they are all co-owned): VASELINE® petroleum jelly [6] (with its iconic Vaseline Jar Shape [7]), AXE® body spray [8], DEGREE® deodorant [9], DOVE® soap [10], HELLMAN’S® mayonnaise [11], LIQUID I.V.® hydration powder [12], NUTRAFOL® vitamins [13], and TRESemmé® hair care products [14].
